And, a huge THANK YOU to Kristin Parker and her team of volunteers, as well as our Hospitality Committee (Michelle Howard and Joni Curtis) for orchestrating a very organized and successful TA week!

The Spring Girls on the Run (GOTR) team has been practicing early mornings getting ready for the 5K in May. The practice 5k will be held on Friday, May 11th, right after school. If you can help count in the mornings or afternoons, please contact me (lschmorrow@gmail.com)  !!

The next PTA Meeting will be held on May 15th, 7-8pm, in the CPES Library. We will be hearing all about the new standards based progress reporting being implemented in Fairfax County Public Schools next year. We will no longer see O-G-S-N nor A-B-C-D grades, but rather a “scales” system demonstrating a student’s mastery of grade-level standards. As always, our wonderful Girl Scouts will be providing babysitting services in the cafeteria until 8pm.

Next week begins our SOL testing in Grades 3-6! Make sure your students have lots of rest and a good breakfast. Parents are contributing SOL snacks and drinks via the classroom teachers. Contact your students’ teachers to see how you can help!

School Supply Order Forms went home in last week’s Friday folder! This is a very easy way to order school supplies for next year without having to worry about it in the summer. The forms are due May 25th!

Yearbook Order Forms!! Stacey Leimbach finished and submitted the beautiful yearbook for this school year! The books will arrive at school in June so if you haven’t already ordered one, there is still time to do so! Contact Stacey (stacey_leimbach@yahoo.com) to place the order.

We are still looking for a volunteer to coordinate with the committee chairs from our fellow Vienna Elementary Schools participating in the Safe Routes to School Program. Girls on the Run – We Need Coaches!

12 Jan

After 7 wonderful seasons, Laura Martin is stepping down as head coach of the GOTR program at Cunningham Park. We are looking for someone to pick up this program as the head coach, as well as an assistant coach, for the Spring season. The head coach should be a woman due to the nature of the subjects that are discussed with the girls in grades 3 through 6; the coaches must be 21 years old, must pass a background investigation/drug test, and must take 2 online training classes/become CPR certified.

The GOTR season lasts about 2 1/2 months and practices are held 2 mornings a week before school (7-8am). Helping the girls set and meet their goals, as well as helping them understand issues that are common to girls in their age group provides coaches with a rewarding opportunity that is unique to this program. The coaches do not need to have children that are participating, nor do they need to have students at CPES!  If you are interested in helping CPES by serving as a GOTR coach, or if you know someone in our community who may be interested, please email me (cpespta.president@gmail.com).

Welcome Back!

4 Jan

I hope everyone enjoyed the Winter Break and are feeling relaxed and refreshed and ready for the New Year!

On Tuesday, January 10th, we are lucky to have Dr. Rene Hackney join us at the PTA Meeting (7pm, library). She will be discussing “Social Aggression” and ways to support and address the victim child, the aggressive child and the bystanders.  This will include how to build a sense of community in the classroom or neighborhood. Please join us for this important presentation and Q&A session.

On January 13th, students will bring home their Read-a-Thon forms! Read-a-Thon will begin the weekend of the 14th, and end on January 31st . Forms will be due on Wednesday, February 1st. This is not only a big fund raiser for CPES, but also is a great time to encourage our students to read, read, read! Students who read will earn credits for the Book Fair, which will be held the week of February 13th. Look for more details in this week’s Friday folder!

Weekly Update!

6 Dec

In honor of Inclusive Schools Week (December 5th-12th), the PTA meeting on December 13th will focus on Inclusion Programs at CPES and within FCPS. Inclusive Schools Week is a time designated to acknowledge the hard work and commitment of teachers, administrators, students, and parents in making their schools more inclusive and, thereby, significantly contributing to the development of a more inclusive society. CPES teacher representatives will speak briefly about how our school continues the journey toward providing a quality education to all children regardless of differences in ability, gender, ethnicity, language and health status.  We will also hear from our Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) representatives who will describe the HIPPY readiness program that helps qualifying parents prepare their three-, four-, and returning five-year-old children for success in school. Hellen Cortez and Elizabeth Bruzon will present certificates to two of the participating families at the PTA meeting.  We are also lucky to have Early Literacy and Family Literacy representatives from Fairfax County join us at our PTA meeting. We will hear not only how this program is succeeding but how the Family Literacy instructor, Manuel Lavalle, has been doing an excellent job at having conversations with his students about the PTA, volunteering and the benefits of being actively engaged in their children’s education.  So, please join us for this exciting meeting on 12/13 at 7pm in the library. As always, babysitting services are provided by our wonderful CPES Girl Scouts!

For those of you on Facebook who would like CPES updates, feel free to “like” the Cunningham Park Elementary School PTA Facebook page!  And, don’t forget to do your Amazon shopping on-line via the CPES PTA website (www.cppta.org) Rewards page!! CPES receives money for sales via our website.
